Early End-of-Year Gift Ideas: Smart Planning, Retail Packaging, and Fall/Winter Trends

The BIG Show & Tell, Special Gift Edition | September 29, 2026

Episode Overview
In this Special Gift Edition of The BIG Show & Tell, Donna Bender and Kim White share END OF THE YEAR gift ideas for clients, employees, referral partners, and business associates, early enough to plan ahead.

Donna added this show because every November her phone starts ringing with last-minute gift requests. Waiting until the last minute brings rush fees, extra freight charges, and shipping delays. That extra money doesn't buy a better gift. It goes to expenses instead of into the gift itself.

Your gift doesn't have to arrive in December. It can go out in October or November, or as a NEW YEAR gift, so you're the only one welcoming the new year with your clients.

Who it's for
This episode is for CEOs, marketers, small business owners, HR and people leaders, sales and marketing teams, and companies that want to plan END OF THE YEAR gifts with strategy and intention.

If you want to thank clients, recognize employees, remember referral partners, or get ahead of your gifting this year, this show is packed with ideas you can use.

Segment 1: The GIVING Plan
Many people treat gifting like a fire drill. The holidays sneak up, they panic, and they ship something off. Donna shares the four parts of a GIVING Plan, and the story of an inspirational word cloud gift she sent during uncertain times that gave people hope .

  • WHO are you showing up for: clients, prospects, referral partners, and your team? Referral and synergy partners are often missing from the list.
  • WHEN: Don't show up in December when everyone else does. Pick a day like International Coffee Day in October.
  • WHAT you send always comes last, never first, because the right gift depends on who receives it.
  • BUDGET: A giving plan without a number is a good idea that never happens.

The strategy: give first, give with intention, and the business follows.

Segment 2: New Products for Q4
Donna shares four new products: a MagSafe speaker that lights up a logo when it's on, doubles as a phone holder, and a camera shutter; a slim MagSafe power charger, a 3-in-1 charging device, and a mini speaker that clips onto a hat, bag, or shirt.

  • Each one comes in a white gift box or a retail-style gift box.
  • Retail-style packaging raises the perceived value of the gift.
  • It's the same item at the same cost to you, but it feels like more coming out of that box.
  • Kim points out how well speakers fit construction crews, offices, and anyone who works with music on.

The strategy: presentation is part of the gift.

Segment 3: Corporate Training
Most people know Donna for gifts. Fewer know her background as VP of Merchandising at Calvin Klein and Director of Sales at Salvatore Ferragamo, or that she trains corporate teams.

  • Training can be a half day in your office or a series over several weeks.
  • Everyone works from a workbook covering the why, the who, the what, the when, and the budget.
  • By the end, every workbook is filled out and everyone knows their next step.
  • It replaces the end-of-year panic with a plan that's mapped out for everyone.

The strategy: build the GIVING Plan with your team so gifting becomes easy instead of overwhelming.

Segment 4: Fall/Winter Trends
Donna introduces four Fall/Winter trends with product examples. People are buying smarter and are tired of wasting money.

  • Looks Like More: Buy the brand for fewer people, or buy the look for everyone. Products with retail-style design and packaging carry a higher perceived value at a lower cost.
  • Back in the Office: People are back in the office, and companies are spending to make it worth the trip, with useful gifts for the desk, the commute, and the workday.
  • Create an Experience: Instead of handing something out, let them make it. Experiential activations at events, such as building your own pen or decorating a hat, make your brand memorable.
  • The Ones They Keep: 78% of people keep a promotional product when it's useful. The Thermos bottle Donna gave Kim is a name brand people use every day, and they see your name every time.

The strategy: thoughtful matters, and so does useful. The best gifts are both.

Segment 5: Gifts by Generation
A gift that thrills your biggest client may fall flat with a new graduate you hired. Research shows Gen Z wants to put down the phone, go out, and meet people, and they're drawn to retro and nostalgic things.

  • Donna shows a tiny camera on a chain, (that can be imprinted on an epoxy dome disc), so they can capture the moment without pulling out their phone.
  • This isn't about breaking people into age groups. It's about knowing who you're giving to.
  • Do your clients like to ski, cook, or be outdoors? Those details lead to the right gift.
  • A gift that ends up in the trash doesn't get you remembered, or not in a good way.

The strategy: it's not an age conversation. It's a human one.

Segment 6: Retail Packaging

Donna shows retail-inspired packaging up close: a box within a box holding two power chargers that also work as flashlights and hand warmers.

  • It's a great gift for a couple or two people in the same household.
  • It suits skiers, parents at outdoor events, climbers, bikers, and anyone heading into fall and winter.
  • Opening the packaging becomes part of the experience.
  • When your charger saves the day, they think of you.

The strategy: a useful gift in beautiful packaging hits a lot of marks at once.

Segment 7: Why a No Is Never the End of the Story

Almost 20 years ago, Donna thanked every person who met with her, whether they bought or not, with a white pen in a silver box with a silver bow, when everyone else was giving out black pens. People called to buy them and sent referrals her way.

  • 59% of people say elevated design makes a gift feel more valuable.
  • Donna shows today's version: an NFC pen with a chip that takes people to a website when tapped to a phone.
  • There's no link, no code to scan, and nothing to download. You touch it to the phone.
  • It works like a business card and a pen in one.

The strategy: give without strings attached. The people who don't buy from you are often the ones who send people to you who will.

Segment 8: The Glamper and the Can Speaker
Donna closes the product demos with the Glamper, a lantern and speaker, and the Drink Speak, a wireless charger and can speaker with a full-color digital wrap all the way around.

  • Full-color digital lets you place your logo on a fun background or graphic.
  • Donna adapts her tagline, "Who will you inspire today?", to fit each item.
  • Speakers are used where people gather: the deck, the tailgate, the campsite, the backyard, and the beach.
  • Kim suggests the RV industry, with all those campfires across the country.

The strategy: you're not giving someone a speaker. You're giving them an experience they'll remember.

Strategic Wrap-Up
The big message from this Special Gift Edition: give early and give with intention.

  • Start with a list of the people you want to thank, even if it's one person.
  • Remember your referral and synergy partners.
  • Decide who before you decide what.
  • Choose gifts that are useful and let retail-style packaging raise their perceived value.
  • Get to know your recipients instead of assuming by age.
  • Create experiences, because people remember how a gift made them feel.

Surprise and delight your clients early, before the holiday rush. Give value first, give with intention, give without strings attached, and watch the magic that follows.
