The Things We Keep to Say "I Remember"

Collection of custom challenge coins used as keepsakes for recognition and remembrance

On September 11th, 2001, my daughter and I were living in New York.

The experience of that day, and the hard months that followed, are something I will never forget.

One important outcome of that day is how people came together.

Everyone just wanted to help each other.

All over the city, people started making little American flag pins out of safety pins and beads to raise money.

My daughter and I made them too.

We gave them to nonprofits, who sold them for the Red Cross, the firefighters, and the first responders.

They were simple, handmade, and heartfelt.

And people wore them everywhere.

Not because they were fancy.

Because they meant something.

That is what objects can do.

A pin is not just a pin when it holds a story.

I still have my FDNY baseball cap. I have kept it all these years, honoring the firefighters who gave everything that day.

For many people, something like that is not just a souvenir.

It is a reminder of what happened, who showed up, and why we remember.

The meaning behind what we keep

You never know what is going to stay with you.

A cap.

A note.

A photograph.

A challenge coin.

A small object can carry a much bigger story.

It can remind us of people, places, service, sacrifice, love, courage, and moments we do not want to forget.

That is why challenge coins are so meaningful.

To someone outside the story, they may look like small pieces of metal.

But to the person who received one, they can represent trust, duty, belonging, recognition, or a moment that changed them.

The object helps carry the meaning, but the story is what people remember.

Why tangible things matter

In business, we sometimes rush past that part.

We think about the logo, the quantity, the deadline, and the budget.

Those things matter, of course.

But the best gifts and branded pieces begin with a better question:

What do we want someone to feel when they receive this?

Some objects are valuable because of what they cost.

Others are valuable because of what they carry.

That is the difference between giving someone one more thing and giving them something worth keeping.
